Museu Fundação de Serralves

Museum

The Serralves House was built in the 30s of the 20th century, commissioned by the second Count of Vizela, Carlos Alberto Cabral, to the architect José Marques da Silva, in the lands inherited from the family.

Originally built as a private residence, it is currently one of the most notable examples of Art Deco architecture in Portugal, classified as Property of Public Interest in 1996. Its gardens were designed by Jacques Gréber inspired by the French gardens of the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the 80's the property was acquired by the Portuguese State, and in the following decade the Foundation and the new Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves were born with its modern architecture construction designed by Siza Vieira.

Currently, the museum is a national landmark of contemporary art, where you can visit the temporary exhibitions, the gardens and the "House of Serralves".

The space is also the stage of educational programs, theater, music and performance, especially in the known 40-hour non-stop when the museum and gardens become a space of different culture, open to the public 40 hours in a row, day and night.
